In recent years, power generators have faced difficulties in licensing large hydroelectric plants due to the socio-environmental sensitivity associated with the flooding of large areas where the plants operate. However, technologies that help mitigate these impacts are beginning to open up new perspectives for projects in terms of environmental licensing conducted by different regulatory bodies, including the Brazilian Institute for the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (IBAMA). With the use of technological solutions, licensing can be speeded up, say experts.
