About Bio Bureau

Bio Bureau Biotecnologia was founded in 2009 by scientist Mauro Rebelo, with the help of FINEP’s PRIME program, with the aim of transforming laboratory research into market technologies. Our first product, a modified bacterium for bioremediation and biomining, was developed and patented in partnership with the Institute of Biophysics at UFRJ.

In 2014, after receiving an angel investment, we became a company dedicated to the research and development of biotechnological solutions. Our aim is to help companies reduce risks and create competitive advantages from biodiversity, always in line with the UN’s sustainability objectives.

We are an international team of entrepreneurial scientists. We combine scientific rigor with a focus on our clients’ business. We specialize in environmental challenges such as invasive species and biodiversity metrics, contributing to the resilience and biodiversity of ecosystems.

Our client base is diverse, covering sectors such as energy, cosmetics, food and mining. Our clients include Reservas Votorantim, Citrosuco, CTG Brasil, Repsol, SPIC and Tijoá Energia.

We are located in the UFRJ Technology Park, the largest university in Brazil, close to the global research centers of companies such as AMBEV, Petrobrás, L’OREAL and FMC. We believe that Brazil, with its rich biodiversity and favorable regulatory environment, offers the ideal setting for our global impact initiative.

We have received awards from FIRJAN, AHK, Bayer and the Brazilian Bioinnovation Association, which validate our commitment to excellence and innovation. Since 2021 we have been among the Top#10 biotech companies in the 100 Open Startups ranking.

Area of activity

Restoring nature is not just an ethical responsibility; it is also a fundamental requirement for the long-term viability of businesses. Economic sectors such as energy, food, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and agro depend directly or indirectly on natural resources. The preservation and recovery of ecosystems are crucial to guaranteeing the sustainability of these businesses. However, more than 1 billion hectares of land are degraded globally and less than 8% of the oceans are protected areas.

Biodiversity is the basis of ecological resilience and should therefore be the purpose of any ecosystem monitoring and conservation program. It reflects and integrates the impacts of land use, competitive exclusion and pollution and measures the benefits of actions to prevent, recover and mitigate these impacts.

Invasive species pose a serious threat to biodiversity and the economy. The IPBES report estimated the damage caused by them at 400 billion dollars a year. It is also estimated that they are responsible for around 39% of species extinctions in the last four centuries. This devastating impact highlights the importance of dealing with the problem of invasive species effectively in order to restore biodiversity and reduce the business risk associated with it.

Conserving biodiversity is traditionally complex and expensive. Estimates suggest that protecting all important terrestrial sites globally would cost around 76 billion dollars a year. Biotechnology can reduce this investment and increase its effectiveness and efficiency.

Bio Bureau develops sustainable technologies based on biotechnology to enhance, preserve and restore biodiversity, recognizing it as the backbone of any environmental conservation and restoration effort.

Our portfolio includes projects to develop technologies to detect and control invasive species that impact the economy and biodiversity in Brazil. This includes the golden mussel in rivers, lakes and reservoirs, the sun coral in the sea and the Javaporco in the terrestrial environment.

We have also developed environmental DNA technologies for effective, large-scale monitoring of biodiversity in aquatic and terrestrial environments. This technology enables rapid assessments of impacts on biodiversity and the monitoring of specific species, such as invasive, endangered or of socio-economic importance, facilitating the identification and mitigation of the impacts of economic activities and the assessment of the benefits of preservation and restoration initiatives.

In the country with the greatest biodiversity in the world, these technologies are essential for preserving and sustainably managing natural resources, guaranteeing the long-term sustainability of the businesses that depend on them.
Bio Bureau is committed to offering expertise and innovation to help our clients achieve their environmental and business sustainability goals, promoting environmental conservation and sustainable development.

Governance Systems

The Bio Bureau’s governance is structured on four levels: self-governance through an advisory board and international scientific committee; light governance with entities such as IBAMA; federal governance involving agencies such as CTNBio, MAPA and MMA, and following laws such as the Biosafety Law; and international governance, aligned with guidelines from specialized groups and considering adherence to standards such as the Global Compact and ISO certifications.
