The first stage of assessing the risk of horizontal transmission of the CRISPR construct will be in silico (computational) and will seek to identify the target gene of the control technology and possible non-specific target sites in the genomes of non-target species. Bioinformatics tools and algorithms will be used to prospect the genomes of selected non-target species available in public databases, such as fish that feed on the golden mussel, to assess the potential for cutting the CRISPR/Cas9 system in the target genes and target sites eventually identified in these organisms.
