During its first few years, Bio Bureau raised grant funding (FINEP, FAPERJ, CNPq) to create a prototype of its product: a bacterial strain capable of binding to heavy metals in solution and removing these elements from rural, domestic, urban and industrial effluents and water in treatment plants; from the gene of the metallothionein protein of the oyster
Crassostrea rhizophorae
. The work was divided into five stages:

  1. Construction, cloning and sequencing of the protein;
  2. Transformation, expression and characterization of the construct;
  3. Genetic stabilization of recombinant strains;
  4. Functionality of the prototype;
  5. Production scheduling.

The first two stages were developed during the doctoral thesis of Juliana Americo, now CTO at Bio Bureau.

The 3 subsequent stages were partly carried out during Nemanja Jankovic’s master’s thesis, working together with doctoral student Milica Markovic. The result was a bacterium capable of removing 90% of the metals in solution in the laboratory.

In 2016, a technical and scientific cooperation agreement was signed between the Bio Bureau and UFRJ, which submitted a patent application for the innovation to the INPI. The article describing the solution is still in preparation, but the videos above explain how the bacteria works and how it could increase the efficiency and sustainability of metal mining.

Metal Catcher Bacteria has been developed with funding from various grant projects over time:

  • FINEP Prime – Finep’s First Innovative Company, 2009 (R$ 120,000.00)
  • FAPERJ/ADT1; Aid for Technological Innovation Projects – 2010/1 – E-26/190.170/2010 – amount approved: R$40,000.00
  • FAPERJ/INOVATEC; Support for Technological Innovation in the State of Rio de Janeiro from FAPERJ, 2011 – – E-26/190.082/2011 – approved amount: R$150,000.00)
  • ICGEB – International Center for Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering located in Trieste, Italy, 2013, CRP 13/023 – amount approved €48,000
  • NFR Norwegian Research Foundation. Petromax2/ pre-proposal. Brazil/Norway cooperation. BIOSENTRUM AS/ Bio Bureau Biotechnology. Prosjektnr: 241094/E30 – approved value €50.000
  • CNPq/RHAE – 2014. Process: 464250/2014-5. R$360.000,00
