O projeto de controle biotecnológico do mexilhão-dourado foi inspirado pela pesquisa básica do Laboratório de Biologia Molecular Ambiental do Instituto de Biofísica Carlos Chagas Filho da Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, que participou da força tarefa do CNPq/MMA de controle do mexilhão-dourado em 2005 e concluiu o sequenciamento do genoma do mexilhão dourado em 2017.
