Today, 75% of national reservoirs are using genetically modified mussels to control the infestation. The risk of the mussel reaching the Amazon, once feared, is now considered irrelevant.<\/p>\n

Free fish<\/h2>\n

With the invader under control, fishermen don’t need extra tanks or nets for aquaculture. They use them once a month while cleaning the mussel tanks. Nor do they suffer from the terrible smell of decomposing mussels taken from their nets and left out in the open. They also save on feed, the fish grow more and reach the market better, while less organic matter contaminates the reservoir.<\/p>\n

Online monitoring<\/h2>\n

of the infestation is done by PCR of larvae, in probes in the reservoir itself, in real time. They are also able to assess the presence of more than 96 species of aquatic biodiversity, including benthos, plankton and necton. Thanks to the research that was done years before with ANEEL R&D. A pre-treatment of the reservoir and industrial facilities with micro-encapsulated pesticides meant that the time needed to control the population with gene-drive was reduced from 20 to 2 years. Although it began after the development of the malaria mosquito, the mussel ended up becoming the first organism to be released to control an invasive species in the environment.<\/p>\n
